The 18th of July marked the anniversary of the tragic passing of celebrated South African race driver Gugu Zulu. On this poignant day, his widow, Letshego Zulu, paid tribute to her late husband, honouring his memory with a heartfelt social media post.
Gugu died on 18 July 2016, while attempting to summit Mount Kilimanjaro. Gugu was on a charity trip linked to Nelson Mandela’s legacy, aiming to raise funds for sanitary towels for underprivileged girls through the Caring4Girls program as reported by BBC.
IOL further states that while descending Mount Kilimanjaro with his wife Letshego, he experienced severe breathing problems. His final Facebook post mentioned flu-like symptoms. The group’s doctor suspected meningitis and recommended urgent medical attention, but Gugu passed away early Monday morning, the same day South Africa celebrated Mandela’s legacy of selfless giving.
On Instagram, Letshego shared a video commemorating the eighth anniversary of her husband Gugu Zulu’s death. She wrote, “8yrs later…Gone but never Forgotten” and highlighted how smartphone technology allowed her to sync and create a video from images and clips Gugu had taken. Letshego encouraged followers to take a moment to view some of his last images, using hashtags #Memories #GZ #MandelaDay.

According to TshisaLive, in an interview with YFM, Letshego discussed her ongoing journey of healing. She explained that while she is “open to life,” she is not yet ready to date. Her memoir, I Choose to Live: Life After Losing Gugu, represents a significant part of her healing process. She revealed that writing the book brought her comfort and allowed her to reach a level of peace with her loss.
