Lerato Kganyago’s 12 on Hillel Video Goes Viral Again, Hotel Says She’s Not the Owner

The Video That Sparked It All

A jubilant video of media personality Lerato Kganyago circling a glass of bubbly while announcing the purchase of the luxurious 12 on Hillel Villa & Spa resurfaced on social media this week. In the clip, she beams, “I’m officially part of the hospitality industry! Please support my business, you’re all welcome…” It looked like a triumph.

The Reality Behind the Champagne

But victory didn’t last long. Notably, the villa’s management issued a statement clarifying that neither Lerato nor her husband holds ownership, operational, or managerial rights to the hotel. The properties’ guest register and official records, they say, show no tie between Lerato and the establishment beyond perhaps the restaurant inside it.

A Backdrop of Ownership Mysteries

Putting this into context: the hotel had previously been linked with Lerato’s name when she revealed its existence on Instagram on Valentine’s Day. At the time, she hinted it was a gift from her partner, businessman Thami Ndlela. Yet business filings two years prior showed Lerato owning only the Amour restaurant and holding a part-share in the broader property, not full ownership. The new disclosures align with earlier reporting that Lerato was simply the “face” of the hotel venture rather than the title owner.

Social Media Has Its Say

South Africans didn’t hold back. On X (formerly Twitter), viewers mocked the mismatch between the bubbly announcement and the hotel’s clarification. One user laughed: “She must’ve forgotten that the internet never forgets.” Another cracked, “What a bad month to be Lerato.” The comments ranged from playful ribbing to sharper calls for responsibility when public figures lead with image over explanation.

What This Means for Celebrity Culture in Mzansi

This saga taps into something deeper than celebrity news. In a nation where reputation and business often overlap with social media personas, the lines between “I own this” and “I’m associated with this” can blur. For Lerato—long celebrated as a successful DJ, radio host, and entrepreneur—the correction matters not just in fine print but in how fans interpret trust, transparency, and ambition.

The Takeaway—Read Between the Bubbles

The hotel clip and its fallout show how one gleaming moment can unravel when the records tell a different story. Lerato’s announcement reflected aspiration; the hotel’s statement reflected structure. The two don’t have to cancel each other out—but the public will always demand clarity. And in South Africa’s celebrity-driven ecosystem, it’s that clarity that keeps the story from being yesterday’s champagne pop and today’s headline.
