The fifth annual South African Social Media Awards (SASMA) are now officially within reach, and some of Mzansi’s top online creatives have begun leading the way as front-runners in the various categories.
The event is dedicated to celebrating the best content and campaigns on social media across all platforms, and is set to take place on 22 November at Mosaïek in Randburg.
Whether you are a social media enthusiast, marketer, or content creator, this event prides itself as the perfect opportunity to learn, network, and be inspired.
Earlier this month, the nominees were revealed, and already media personality and reality TV star Lasizwe Dambuza earned himself a nod as the front runner ahead of the eagerly-awaited awards evening.
The 27-year-old was recently nominated in multiple categories, including African Social Media Star of the Year, Most Popular Content Across Platforms, and Social Media Personality of the Year, which sees him go head-to-head with global personalities, Trevor Noah and the Bliss hitmaker, Tyla.
Lasizwe first rose to prominence because of his relatable social comedic skits which were shared on Facebook and TikTok. This later turned him into a household name, earning a reality show, Lasizwe: Fake It Till You Make It, and later grabbing YouTube by the horns with shows like Awkward Dates.
Since then, he has become one of South Africa’s most influential talents, gaining tons of endorsements and featuring on the Forbes 30 under 30 list.
In 2023, he announced his decision to quit YouTube and focus on his mental health, but he has since made his big return and appears to have found his passion for entertainment again.
In order for Lasizwe to win in the various categories, votes from the public are essential. However, this comes with a small fee. Taking to social media, Lasizwe thanked his followers for their unwavering support, but later added that he doesn’t agree with the way things are being done.
He later told followers that their support is enough, and that he would much rather have them save their money to cover their essential needs than to vote for him to win a trophy that would eventually accumulate dust.
