Legendary South African vocal group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has joined forces with British indie-folk band Stornoway for a unique musical collaboration that brings together two distinct cultural traditions.

The partnership sees the Grammy-winning group contribute its signature isicathamiya harmonies to music featured on Stornoway’s upcoming album, creating a blend of African choral sounds and contemporary folk influences. The collaboration is already generating excitement among music lovers eager to hear how the two celebrated acts have combined their talents.

A Meeting of Musical Worlds

The project is the result of a shared vision between the artists to create music that transcends geographical and cultural boundaries. By bringing together traditional Zulu vocal styles and British folk music, the collaboration aims to showcase the universal power of music to connect people from different backgrounds.

For Ladysmith Black Mambazo, the project continues a long history of international partnerships that have helped introduce South African music to audiences around the world. The group has spent decades building a reputation as one of the country’s most influential cultural ambassadors.

Celebrating Cultural Exchange

Members of Ladysmith Black Mambazo have described the collaboration as an opportunity to celebrate cultural exchange through song. The group praised Stornoway for embracing the spirit of collaboration and showing respect for the traditions that have shaped their distinctive sound.

The project also reflects a growing trend in the global music industry, where artists from different genres and cultures are increasingly working together to create fresh and innovative sounds.

A Connection to South Africa

The collaboration carries a special connection to South Africa through Stornoway bassist and producer Oli Steadman, who was born in Johannesburg before moving to the United Kingdom. His South African roots helped inspire the partnership and provided a natural bridge between the two musical worlds.

“Kuyilungelo lethu ukuhlangana nawe. It has been such an honour being welcomed by Mambazo, collaborating to enrich each others sound, far beyond what I’d imagined was possible. Our two groups share a vision of a united world in which cultural & political divisions are bridged by song & celebration. Sponsored by the UK’s Music Export Growth Scheme our visit has far exceeded expectations, creating a fresh, energised sound that I’m sure will reach many communities around the world with its message of hope and unity,” Oli said.

By combining their unique experiences and influences, the artists hope to create music that resonates with audiences both locally and internationally.

Continuing a Legacy of Global Collaboration

Ladysmith Black Mambazo is no stranger to international success. Since rising to global prominence through its work with Paul Simon on the landmark album Graceland, the group has collaborated with artists from across the globe while remaining true to its South African heritage.

“Music is how our cultures speak to each other without translation. When Oli and Stornoway came to us with open hearts and a deep respect for isicathamiya, we knew this was more than a recording. It is two histories meeting in song. We welcome them to Durban, to our home, and we are proud to share our voices on for this song. The world needs more of this kind of unity,” Sibongiseni Shabalala said.

This latest partnership further strengthens the group’s reputation as a pioneer of cross-cultural musical collaboration and a champion of African music on the world stage.

Looking Ahead

As anticipation builds for the release of the new music, fans can expect a rich fusion of folk melodies and powerful vocal harmonies. The collaboration promises to highlight the beauty of cultural diversity while delivering a message of unity, hope and connection.

For both Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Stornoway, the project serves as a reminder that music has the ability to bridge divides, celebrate shared humanity and bring people together, regardless of where they come from.
