The South African Police Service (SAPS) based in KwaZulu-Natal, the province in which rapper Kiernan ‘AKA’ Forbes and celebrity chef Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane were murdered, have dismissed the alleged media claims that they have found the firearm used to kill the two men.

AKA and Tibz were gunned down outside popular restaurant, Wish on Florida in Durban.

It is reported that the alleged claims come after a man in his early 20’s was found with an unregistered firearm in his possession this past weekend in Umlazi, located southwest of Durban.

Reports have also alleged that the gun was sent to the labs for ballistic testing and came back positive as the gun used in the February 2023 murders.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the provincial police spokesperson said, “Some media houses, who clearly seem hell-bent to botch any police endeavours to find the killers and bring justice to the families of the victims, started the day on Tuesday morning with unsubstantiated rumours and malicious allegations about the recovery of the so-called murder weapon.”

He continued, “This insensitive, unethical and inconsiderate reporting has great potential of arming the persons of interest with ammunition to further complicate police progress into the matter.”

Stating that the allegations are putting the police under pressure and endangering their lives, the Lieutenant Colonel added that police are once again appealing to the media to respect the investigation process by not publishing allegations and speculations.

“Journalists are also advised against formulating uncorroborated allegations for the sole reason of triggering a reaction or soliciting commentary from the police. The zeal to break the story should never surpass the responsibility to report truthfully and ethically,” he said.

Robert further stated that the police are making progress and will inform the public of any findings when the time is right.
