In collaboration with United for Wildlife, British royal Prince William has launched a brand new docu-series that will provide viewers with a close glimpse into the life of one of the world’s most underappreciated jobs – being a game ranger.

The documentary titled Guardian will explore the struggles that game rangers from various parts of the world face daily. Some of the most notable regions include the Central African Republic, Mexico, Sri Lanka, Brazil, and South Africa.

“Guardians immerses viewers in the unique worlds of the incredible individuals who make huge sacrifices to safeguard the planet’s most threatened environments. From the snowy mountains of the Himalayas to the remote rainforests of Brazil, the series is filmed in some of the most breathtaking yet challenging locations that the Guardians call home, with each episode highlighting the pivotal role of these inspirational individuals,” they revealed in a statement.

It is said that the initiative has been ignited by the Prince’s years of experience, where he has had the opportunity to witness firsthand how dangerous the role of a ranger can be. With the project, he aims to shine a light on these unsung heroes.

Speaking to CNN, he said: “Many people think, being a soldier, being a policeman… these jobs are dangerous and people put their lives on the line. I don’t think people realise it is the same for these guys and girls around the world. Rangers are particularly unknown and unseen.”

As seen in the trailer, one of the nature reserves he focused on is our very own Kruger National Park. A place that has become the victim of rhino horn poaching and the killing of game rangers as we result. Footage shows one of the rangers offering first-hand insights into what exactly the job entails.

The South African episode will be released on 13th June.
