Media personality Khaya Dlanga recently shared how an office desk triggered memories of his late mother.

Nonceba Nolundi Veronica Dlanga died on 22 January this year and was laid to rest on 27 January. Since her passing, a grieving Khaya has been sharing memories in the form of stories of his mother, the most recent one about how a day of laughter turned into a day of sadness.

Posting an image of an office table on his Instagram account, Khaya shared that exactly a month ago today, he leaned on a desk which collapsed and broke. “I laughed and the colleagues asked if I was okay,” he said. “I helped move the broken desk and replaced it with another, the one seen in this picture.”

Returning to his desk 10 minutes later, Khaya then received a message from his sister. “Sisi is trying to call. It’s important,” read the message. Khaya returned the call which he says lasted “exactly 59 WhatsApp seconds.”

After being informed of his mother’s passing, Khaya shared, “It was a cold, lonely moment. I felt completely adrift and alone in a dark, black, lifeless, endless ocean.”

At first, Khaya says he pretended to be okay for a few minutes but eventually walked out after a colleague presented him with work.

“How strange it is that I fell 10 minutes before. And I see the desk every day and I have to see it again today, it’s always a strange reminder. It seems mundane to someone who does not know a profound loss, I imagine. But it is what it is,” he added.

Khaya then concluded, “There is a loneliness I can’t quite describe that comes with knowing that you no longer have parents here on earth, even though they are there in spirit.”
