Kelvin Momo and Sam Deep Face Public Fury After Drag Racing Clip Shakes Mzansi

A moment of fun that backfired

Two of Amapiano’s most followed names, Kelvin Momo and Sam Deep, have found themselves at the centre of a storm after a video of them drag racing on a public road went viral. What looked like a friendly showdown between two artists quickly turned into a national talking point as viewers expressed shock at the reckless behaviour captured so openly.

In the clip, the pair are seen parked side by side at an intersection. Their windows are down; they exchange a few words, rev their engines, and then speed off. Different angles of the incident spread within hours, and the reaction was immediate. South Africans who enjoy their music made it clear that they did not enjoy this.

Fans call the stunt irresponsible

The tone of the online response was firm. Many felt that dragging on a public road was irresponsible, especially from artists who command huge influence. One user called the behaviour dangerous and reminded the artists that their actions could put lives at risk. Another viewer questioned why they appeared to be racing with one hand on the wheel and no visible seatbelts.

People were not just annoyed. They were angry. To many, this was more than a bad decision. It was a disregard for other road users.

The shadow of history

The backlash intensified when comparisons to Molemo “Jub Jub” Maarohanye began trending. South Africans have not forgotten the 2010 tragedy in Soweto, where Jub Jub and Temba Tshabalala were drag racing before crashing into a group of schoolchildren. Four children died, and two were left with life-changing injuries.

Online users warned Kelvin Momo and Sam Deep that Jub Jub’s downfall began with a seemingly harmless moment of thrill that led to irreversible consequences. It is a part of our national memory that still stings, and viewers could not ignore the similarity.

Calls for consequences grow louder

As the clip circulated, calls for accountability followed. Some people argued that any other motorist would have already faced consequences for racing on a public road. Several users tagged law enforcement and demanded arrests, saying South Africa has lost too many lives to reckless driving for this to simply be dismissed as entertainment.

For many Mzansi drivers who spend every day navigating congested roads, potholes, and high accident rates, the stunt felt like a slap in the face.

Silence from the stars

Despite the outrage, neither Kelvin Momo nor Sam Deep has publicly responded. Their platforms remain quiet while the comments continue to climb. Fans who once celebrated their music are now waiting to see whether they will address the concerns or let the backlash grow without explanation.

A reminder of responsibility in the spotlight

This moment has placed an uncomfortable spotlight on how public figures engage with their audience. South Africans love their amapiano stars and the culture that surrounds the genre, but they also expect maturity from those who carry influence. A few seconds of excitement on the road has turned into a national conversation about safety, responsibility, and the ripple effect of reckless behaviour.

For now, the video stands as a stark reminder that fun in the public eye comes with a real-world cost.
