An unsuspecting Kelly Khumalo has found herself the main topic as internet users have labelled the songstress the face of GBV in efforts to defend their right to continue to support convicted perpetrators such as R Kelly.

Gender-based violence (GBV) has been a prevalent talking point in the country for various reasons, including a horrific incident that has left the country shocked, where a man reportedly murdered his partner in an extremely gruesome manner. American singer Chris Brown’s recent visit to the republic further exacerbated the conversation as those who attended have been called out for their role in supporting abusers, as the singer is known to have a violent history.

Coming to their own defence, the Chris Brown concertgoers have rushed to defend themselves, citing the selective activism displayed by people who continue to condemn international artists but support some local artists who are guilty of the same or similar crimes and injustices. Kelly Khumalo became the go-to example, as users rushed to call her supporters out for not maintaining the same energy.

Cos he served his time, same with Jub-jub. Can we talk about your faves Kelly Khumalo and Somizi for a moment? https://t.co/4FcN5K6ylp

Contrarily, other users have expressed shock and disappointment at the lack of shame and empathy others have displayed, citing South Africa’s inability to stand up for injustices when they don’t affect them personally.

You’re probably right south Africans have proven that no amount of abuse will stop them from having a good time https://t.co/MS9CoDhUnn
