South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada has made a return to cricket after serving a one-month suspension for testing positive for cocaine.
The banned substance was detected in a urine sample collected on January 21, 2025, following an SA20 match. According to the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), the test revealed a low concentration of benzoylecgonine (BZE), a metabolite of cocaine, suggesting that the drug was used out of competition and not on match day.
He was formally notified of the result on April 1 and chose not to challenge the findings or request a B-sample analysis. As a result, the 29-year-old fast bowler withdrew from the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he was playing for the Gujarat Titans, and began serving a provisional suspension on April 3.
However, Kagiso’s legal team successfully argued that the drug use was not performance-related, which allowed him to benefit from a reduced sanction under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines. Instead of facing a standard three-month ban, he completed a one-month suspension after undergoing a substance abuse treatment program.
Kagiso rejoined the IPL on May 3 and is now in contention for selection in the upcoming World Test Championship final in June. In a statement, he apologised for his actions, acknowledging his mistake and reaffirming his commitment to maintaining the highest professional standards.
The suspension and subsequent return to cricket have sparked discussions about the challenges athletes face and the importance of support systems in preventing substance abuse. His experience serves as a reminder of the need for athletes to prioritise their well-being and seek help when needed.
Kagiso’s apology and commitment to upholding professional standards demonstrate his dedication to his sport and his desire to move forward positively. As he continues to compete at the highest level, his experience will likely serve as a valuable lesson for him and his peers.
