South African jazz musician Lucas Senyatso, hailing from Mmabatho in the Northwest, is making a significant comeback with his highly anticipated second solo album, ending an 18-year hiatus. Lucas is set to captivate audiences once again with his exceptional musical talent.
According to Daily Sun, the bassist and songwriter’s upcoming four-track EP, titled Africa, is set for release on the 26th July. To celebrate the release, Lucas will host a live show at the Afrikan Freedom Station jazz bar in Sophiatown on the same day.
Weekend Special states that in 1998, Lucas’s life transformed when he was invited by the legendary Hugh Masekela to join his band full-time.
This opportunity led to extensive tours across the USA and Europe, significantly boosting his profile. Soon, he became a sought-after musician in Johannesburg, with his phone constantly ringing as major South African stars and international artists, including Sibongile Khumalo, Ringo Madlingozi, Themba Mkhize, and Patty Austin from USA, wanted his expertise as a seasoned musician, live performer, and songwriter.
Speaking with Daily Sun, Lucas emphasised that despite his long break from recording, he has stayed musically active. Discussing the creative process behind his second solo album with the publication, Lucas noted that while his approach remains consistent, inspiration comes in various forms, such as melodies heard while driving.
The EP Africa carries a powerful message of unity, urging Africans to end wars and conflicts.
“The song pleads with Africans to end wars and conflicts. We hear about wars in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and other places. As Africans, our common enemy is colonisation, and we need to fight it to ensure Africa’s resources benefit its people,” he told the publication.
He is delighted with his 18-year wait for the right recording company, praising Gallo Record Company for their exceptional efficiency and professionalism.
