Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) leader, Julius Malema recently caused an online stir for wearing R28k shoes at the Hollywood Bets Durban July.

The Durban July has become an event where fashion enthusiasts get to judge looks from best to worst, and saw the leader get prosecuted for wearing expensive shoes. This year’s theme, ‘Ride the Wave’, saw many mzansi’s celebrities capture the theme by wearing outfits inspired by the ocean, and although the event is all about fashion internet users were not happy when they saw how much Julius’s shoes cost, as they felt that political leaders should always put their citizens first instead of enjoying the perks by themselves.

An X (previously known as Twitter) user posted the black Corteo on Spikes shoes from Christian Louboutin.

It’s ironic that Julius Malema would spend almost R300,000 on a lavish outfit for a colonial-inspired event like the Durban July, especially when he has often criticized colonialism and pushed for the empowerment of South African and black-owned brands pic.twitter.com/kENznyYCYn

I can’t believe what Julius Malema wore at the Durban July event it’s a talk. Even radio stations are discussing this! ? People are missing Malema. He must continue with his quiet era ?? pic.twitter.com/jEqu5q3mzJ

According to clever blacks

Just because Julius Malema is fighting for poor black people

This are the shoes he must wear at Durban July to show his commitment? pic.twitter.com/RWWmocIdAa

Another user stated that the political leader must practice what he preaches.

We are expecting him to do what he preaches, he must stay away from colonialism and supporting White Monopoly Capital. pic.twitter.com/mOtClheQL9
