Internet seeks justice for young doctor who died on duty

A devastating incident occurred at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital in the Paediatrics Department, where a medical intern lost his life under distressing circumstances.

The intern, who was recently diagnosed with diabetes, had been struggling with severe health issues, including hypotension and episodes of collapse. Despite his deteriorating condition, he was coerced into returning to work by the supervising consultant, who threatened him with repeating the rotation if he didn’t comply.

Colleagues described the intern as a vibrant and dedicated individual who had become unrecognisable due to his illness. He had grown visibly weaker, thinner, and paler, yet he was forced to work despite his obvious struggles. Tragically, he collapsed during his shift and passed away, leaving his family and colleagues in shock.

This heartbreaking incident highlights a disturbing culture of fear, intimidation, and inhumane expectations within the hospital’s Paediatrics Department. Medical interns have reportedly been subjected to mistreatment, including denial of bereavement leave, and are often forced to work under extreme pressure.

The deceased intern was remembered as a kind, diligent, and respectful young professional who had bright prospects ahead of him. His death is a stark reminder of the need for systemic change to protect the well-being and safety of medical interns.

The news of the tragedy has been making rounds on social media platforms, where other young daughters have been vocal about similar issues.

The question remains: how many more lives will be lost before the system prioritises the health and welfare of its healthcare workers?
