A black content creator, who goes by the name Sonwabile, became the victim of a hate crime after a white social media user hurled the k-word at him while live-streaming.

Sonwabile was live on the gaming and livestreaming platform, Kick, when he encountered two white teenagers. In the snippet of the recorded livestream posted on TikTok, the white boy said to the streamer, “You EFF k****r,” also referring to politician Julius Malema’s political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters.

Repeating what he heard in disbelief, Sonwabile says, “Okay, that’s not nice,” before ending the livestream with the two giggling teens. Stunned, he added, “What the f*ck? That is not nice. In 2023, we are still dealing with racism.”

The appalling video made its way to X (formerly Twitter), where users of the app shared their split opinions on the hate crime. A few users had even found the name and information of the boy in the video.

“Racism won’t end anytime soon in South Africa. You can feel the pain in Sonwabile’s voice,” wrote one X user.

Another person said, “You call other black people amakwerekwere but you cry like a toddler when whites call you k****r. Black people should love themselves first.”

“Instead of defending Sonwabile other South Africans are saying why take offence. That is such backward thinking because why are we the only race that doesn’t stand up for each other in racial crimes. We should find those kids and their parents and let them be a lesson to many,” stated another.

While another shared, “Experiencing derogatory terms like k****r is not solely about the immediate impact but underscores a deeper issue – the pervasive nature of racism in our society. This incident serves as a stark illustration of how racist beliefs can be ingrained in children.”
