Internet compare Nigerian designers with SA designers after Durban July

As the Durban July weekend has wrapped up many internet users felt that this year’s designs were an imitation of what Nigerian fashion designers have created before.

The 2024 Hollywood Bets Durban July saw the country’s most captivating fashion moments where celebrities and influencers were dressed to the “T” at the horse racing event, and although some missed the mark with the theme, ‘Ride the Wave’, an online battle between Nigerian and South African designers has erupted.

An X (previously known as Twitter) user @odedanilo took to the app to share images of outfits made by Nigerian designers and what was worn at the Durban July causing many users to feel that it was indeed a copy and paste of outfits.

The fashion industry is known to get inspiration from old designs or trends where they turn them into more modern designs but these Durban July outfits looked too similar to the other.

The user added that if you copy someone else’s work you need to do better.

I mean if you gonna copy/be inspired by someone else’s work . atleast do it good no ? ☹️

One user said:

Thanks Danilo for the flowers. “We no dey carry last” Tailoring is one of the most transferred skill in Nigeria.

It’s not a surprise that many of our designers are exceptionally good. I made few designs for some South Africans too.

And they love it.

One love??
