In the mood for something filling? Here is where to find the most delicious Gatsbies in Cape Town

If there is one thing most Capetonians have in common, it would be their love for the city’s most loved meal, the Gatsby.

This is a popular street meal that is created using the longest roll one can find, and stuffing it with some of your favourite toppings which include, lettuce, fries, eggs, cheese, steak, calamari, vienna – whichever ingredients you prefer, and ensures that the bellies of at least five people are filled.

The Gatsby was created by Rashaad Pandy, the owner of Super Fisheries in Athlone, Cape Town, during the early 70’s. In an interview with the Pretoria-based radio station, Rashaad highlighted that he found himself in one of those “nothing to eat” moments when the creative idea was birthed.

Soon after, he offered the dish to his customers and the dish named the Gatsby, influenced by the 1952 novel, The Great Gatsby, by the author F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Fast forward to today and multiple spots where you can get your hands on this unique treat.

Super Fisheries

Located in Athlone, this fast food eatery is known as the home of the Gatsby. It is the operation room of the meal’s inventor Rashaad Pandy and comes with informative stories about the rise of Cape Town’s most popular food.

Vezz’ Gatsby

Known as Cape Town’s singing chef, Vezz has done an amazing job taking the old Cape Town favourite to new heights. He runs his fisheries from Kuilsriver, and offers local as well as others who come from afar, some entertainment in the form of singing while they wait.

From police officers to actors, singers and 5FM’s Nick Hammon, all agree that the Vezz Golden Dish Gatsby is a place to visit.

Golden Dish

Not too far away from where the Gatsby was first made, is Golden Dish. Located in Gatesville, this venue offers customers a variety of options. In addition to that, those who enter the store also have the option of trying out the various Cape Malay meals like samoosas, and koesister while they wait, providing you with an authentic experience of the Capetonian culture.
