‘I thought I danced like Slenda until videos’ – Thuli P

Actress and club deejay, Thuli Phongolo became a trending topic a few days ago after video’s of her deejaying partnership with partner Sithabile “Slenda_dadancingdj” Zungu started circulating on social media.

The pair announced that they had formed a group called 2faced_sa not only making club goers dance, but also entertaining them by incorporating choreographed dance moves to their deejaying sets.

Slenda_dadancingdj is a professional dancer, being a lead dancer for DJ Tira’s dance group Amadada for many years, it was expected for her to master their choreographed moves. Thuli however, left many social media users stating that she should just stick to deejaying as her moves needed a lot of work and practice.

Speaking in an interview with Ukhozi FM’s Lady D, Thuli expressed that she only realised she couldn’t dance after the backlash and her viewing the videos.

Responding in Zulu and English, she shared:

“It is just refusing (referring to dancing). What bothers me is that in my head I dance exactly like Slenda. In my mind I am killing it, but when I look at my videos I am like, it didn’t come the way I thought it would.”

Cracking up a lot of laughter in the studio she added that she shared with Slenda that the best thing to do in their partnership was not to mimic each other, as their brands highlight different music genres (amapiano and gqom) coming together.

Thuli also spoke of the importance of being true to who you are and what you are capable of. Adding  that being authentic allows for people to understand that they can still make things work without having to look like others.

“At the end of the day the aim is to deejay, make people dance and play nicely. I don’t want people to question Slenda’s professionalism when it comes to dancing because as she is the best . As long as the craft is good and  all is well, we have to have fun and enjoy.”
