‘I skirt with danger all the time, it’s fun’ – Phat Joe

by Bongiwe Mati

Majota Khambule better known as Phat Joe became the second celebrity to grace Thembinkosi Mrototo’s hot seat on his Showmax interview show Unfollowed.

It became clear in the interview that both media personalities had met their match soon after the conversations started.

The former UCT student shared that he thought he would DJ and tour the world after Thembinkosi asked why he chose deejaying and music when UCT offered so much more. He added, “deejaying and music was just an unstoppable train.”

Thembinkosi addressed some of the things the media personality has gotten in trouble and some suspended for in his radio career. These include remarks he made about down syndrome condition; comments he made on the Caster Semenya’s global gender humiliation case and the UKZN fees must fall students’ comments.

Correcting the host who implied that the former Real Gobhoza TV show host had been fired on radio a few times, Joe said Kaya FM was the only radio station that fired him after the Caster Semenya’s topic. He also added that he wasn’t given a proper reason why he was sacked.

Joe’s comments on Caster’s case after she was humiliated abroad and made to undergo tests to prove that she was indeed a woman were:

“Does this mean at this point she has never had a period? Let’s say she has testes; does it mean she’s a man or woman?”

After watching the interview X (Twitter) users shared:

Thembekile is a great host for the show and he didn’t allow Phat Joe to look down on him. He had the right questions . pic.twitter.com/E7zeZYMKgT

#phatjoe is our Simon Cowell we need a voice that breaks boundaries and sparks conversations that we all think about but scared to speak about. He is a true entertainer? #unfollowed

Seasoned broadcaster meets seasoned broadcaster.

I don’t think we’re going to get a better sit down. Phat Joe has met his match. This is fantastic content.

I hope that in future episodes, they sit down with the cancelled (unfollowed) Greg Maloka.#Unfollowed // @ShowmaxOnline pic.twitter.com/g8kKk3gA99
