How HLE and modern gospel are dominating Mzansi pop culture

Gospel music in South Africa is no longer confined to Sunday morning church pews or niche radio stations.

Contemporary faith-based artists are taking over main stages, dominating digital streaming platforms, and claiming top honours alongside pop and amapiano giants.

At the core of this cultural shift is gospel star HLE (Hlengiwe Ntombela), who recently made history at SAMA32 by sweeping major mainstream categories, proving that modern worship music has become a dominant force in South Africa’s pop culture landscape.

A historic SAMA32 sweep

HLE emerged as one of the night’s biggest victors at the SAMAs, claiming three major trophies for her project The Ground We’re On.

She walked away with Best Contemporary Faith Music Album, Lesedi FM Female Artist of the Year, and the night’s coveted SAMPRA Album of the Year.

From backing vocalist to mainstream icon

HLE’s ascent to the top of the charts was built on years of dedication, starting as a backing vocalist for gospel powerhouses like Ntokozo Mbambo before collaborating with legends such as Benjamin Dube and Joyous Celebration.

Since launching her solo career, the KwaZulu-Natal-born artist has continuously pushed sonic boundaries by signing an international partnership deal with Motown Gospel to export her South African faith sound globally.

Why modern gospel resonates with youth culture

HLE’s success points to a much broader trend: young South Africans are embracing faith-based music on their own terms. Rather than viewing gospel purely as ritualistic, Gen Z and millennial listeners turn to modern worship for mental-health grounding, emotional healing, and personal reflection.

HLE’s historic award run proves that when faith meets musical excellence, it crosses every boundary, transforming modern worship into Mzansi’s most undeniable pop culture powerhouse.
