South Africa is celebrating the achievement of 26-year-old Hlengane Precious Mokwena, who has just completed her MSc in Chemistry at the University of Johannesburg with cum laude honours. Adding to her milestone, she has already published two peer-reviewed research papers, a feat many academics only reach later in their careers.
Early Spark in Science
Mokwena grew up in Mamelodi, where her love for science was encouraged by her high school teacher, Mr Mawire. Through his guidance and support from the Kutlwanong Promaths programme, she deepened her skills in maths and physical sciences. Her family’s encouragement kept her grounded as she pursued her studies.
Overcoming Hardship
Her journey was far from easy. She faced the heartbreaking loss of her father and younger sister along the way. Rather than holding her back, those experiences became part of her motivation to succeed. Mokwena credits resilience, faith, and hard work as the driving forces behind her success.
A Future in Research
She is now pursuing a PhD in Chemistry at the University of South Africa. Mokwena hopes to push her research further and collaborate with industry to bring scientific discoveries into practical use. For her, science is not only about academic success but also about solutions that can help communities.
Why Her Story Matters
Representation in STEM is still limited in South Africa, particularly for women in chemistry. Mokwena’s story stands as inspiration to young people, proof that with determination and support, it is possible to achieve at the highest levels of academia.
Her message is simple: follow what you love, seek mentorship, and stay persistent. For many students watching her rise, those words carry weight.
