Handre Pollard reveals his football hero – Simphiwe Tshabalala

When it comes to our national sports stars, South Africans usually burst with pride when it comes to supporting our athletes in green and gold.

The evidence of this was witnessed at several sporting events over the last year including the Rugby World Cup, the Africa Cup of Nations, as well as when MMA fighter Dricus du Plessis became the UFC world heavyweight champion.

For many, this brings to fruition the words expressed by late President Nelson Mandela when he said that sport has the power to unite people.

Recently, mzansi found themselves on cloud nine after two-time World Cup-winning Springbok Handre Pollard revealed his favourite soccer player.

A recent video shared by English rugby club Leicester Tigers showed each of their players revealing who their soccer heroes were.

While many of the club players mentioned European players as their heroes, Handre and fellow Springbok Jasper Wiese kept things local.

The video shows Handre claiming that his hero is Bafana striker Simphiwe Tshabalala, while Jasper on the other hand added that his was the former Everton and Bafana player Steven Pienaar.

Later several teammates joined Jasper in doing Bafana Bafana’s victory dance as seen at the 2010 FiFA soccer world cup.

Since the video release, many South Africans praised the players for honouring fellow local sports stars.

“I love it! My Bokke are so biased, proudly South African,” commented one user.

Another added: “I love it when South Africans support one another.”
