“Looks Like Pine Gel,” Green Pap with Strawberries Sparks Big Reaction in SA

Food has always been more than fuel in South Africa. It’s a marker of culture, a memory of home, and for many, a symbol of tradition. So when a TikTok user posted a plate of pap dyed bright green, served with wors, amasi, and a handful of strawberries, Mzansi didn’t just notice; it reacted.

A TikTok That Turned Heads

The creator, known online as @harppiness, shared the clip on 14 September 2025. In just two days, the video had clocked up over 39 000 likes, 6 000 comments, and more than 16 000 shares. That level of interaction shows how quickly South Africans will gather around food content, especially when it disrupts expectations.

From Tradition to Twist

Pap, wors, and amasi are more than just ingredients. For many households, they are comfort staples, tied to family meals and cultural rituals. In this case, the pap was transformed with green food colouring and paired with strawberries, creating a combination both playful and jarring.

Viewers were quick to give their verdicts. One joked it looked like “pine gel,” a cleaning product no one would expect on a dinner plate. Others teased about the unlikely pairing of fruit with wors. Yet some praised the creativity, saying at least she was brave enough to break the mould.

The Public Conversation

South African TikTok users didn’t just laugh; they debated. For some, this kind of experiment was an insult to tradition. Pap, they argued, should stay as it is, a dish that connects people to roots and family tables. For others, it was harmless fun, proof that culture isn’t static but evolves when people add their own flair.

The video became a canvas for bigger conversations: how far can you stretch tradition before it stops being recognisable? And does food lose its meaning if you change how it looks or tastes?

Food, Identity, and Experimentation

This moment shows how deeply food sits in South Africa’s cultural identity. The plate was never just pap, wors, and strawberries; it was a clash of values. Some see experiments like this as disrespect; others see them as modern creativity. In a country where food is often tied to memory, heritage, and even politics, a coloured pap dish can carry more weight than its maker intended.

It’s unlikely that green pap will become a national trend, but it has already left its mark. Whether people laughed, cringed, or applauded the experiment, the response proves how seriously South Africans take their food. One TikTok video reminded everyone that even a simple meal can stir pride, humour, and debate. And maybe that’s what makes food such a powerful connector in the first place.
