Gogo Skhotheni opens up about African Spirituality

by Sinesipho Joyi

Reality TV star, Patricia Motsoeneng  popularly known as Gogo Skhotheni sat down with DJ Sbu on his podcast The Hustler’s Corner SA.

The spiritual healer was very forthcoming about African spirituality and left many in awe with what she shared. She expressed that the problem with modern day Sangoma’s is that they are not honest. She continued to say that  people come to them, desperately seeking help and Sangoma’s take advantage of that desperation.

‘Never ever go to a sangoma when you are desperate because you’ll hear exactly what you want to hear. You need to go to them when you’re happy, go when you don’t see anything wrong with your life and see what they’ll you.’

She also spoke about the growing popularity of young healers and how it has been dubbed as a ‘fashion trend’

‘When people want to call it fashion we get angry, but it’s true. There’s a difference between tradition and a calling’ she said

Gogo Skhotheni continued to say ‘As traditional healers, we are in the wrong because we are selling people [this] is how you should look with all the glam and we don’t make them understand themselves first, that this is bigger than looking good to the public’ she emphasised this as a  contributor to people going into spirituality and not because they have a calling.

She also spoke to DJ Sbu about Tokoloshe’s  and how families should be intentional about fetching spirits when loved ones have been involved in road accidents. ‘When we say to you to please fetch spirits from the roads, do so. Because we go there and we fetch spirits so that they can work for us (dark magic)’
