‘From tackles to tannins’ – Springbok stars launch their new wine

Springbok scrummagers Ox Nche, Trevor Nyankane and Bongi Mbonambi have proven that the chemistry they share when playing on the field is not an isolated case – instead, they have now transferred this bond into a lucrative business.

The trio who represent both the national team, Springboks, and Durban-based rugby team the Sharks have ventured into the wine-making industry with the unveiling of their own wine, called Bomalumz.

The project appears to have been in the pipeline for months now, as their followers would often see them hosting live chats on social media platforms while driving around on tractors; however, until recently, their plans have not been revealed to the broader public.

It was in January this year that the double World Cup winner, Bongi Mbonambi, first gave his followers a glimpse of their new project.

In the post which shows him harvesting grapes while driving a tractor, the Bok hooker wrote: “The uncles are harvesting with the cousins (Four Cousins). We are cooking something special.”

Over time they have shared several other posts regarding the process.

These wines come in an array of flavor profiles and are best known for their Kantlyn Sauvignon Blanc and Dark Arts Red wine, which is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Meanwhile, the trio is not the first of the World Cup winners to venture into a business partnership. After winning the prestigious rugby tournement, retired prop, Steven Kitschoff and hooker, Malcolm Marx launched their beer, called Bomb Squad Larger – a name they received for their impact off the bench in Rassie Erasmus 2019 team.
