The Johannesburg Zoo is calling all locals and animal lovers to come and enjoy a day filled with fun, laughter and tons of learning experiences.

This is because this year officially marks the 120th year of the Zoo’s existence! The zoo has long been a home to many of South Africa’s most diverse creatures, and this year the they want you as the public to celebrate with them.

The zoo was originally donated by the firm of Hermann Eckstein to the people of the city of Joburg in 1904 to be used for recreational use.

In a post in Instagram, the zoo revealed Hermann was involved in the development of a mining town and planted three million trees in an area, then known as Sachenwald, now renamed as Saxonwald.

Since then, it has evolved into what can now be identified as a world class facility.

But that’s not all, for the first time ever, they will be dropping the entrance fee to as low as R20, 00 ensuring that nobody is left behind. This price will be valid for the entire month while visitors whose birthday is in March will have the opportunity to explore what the facility has to offer, free of charge.

There will also be loads of entertainment for seniors, and on the 21st of March the zoo will officially celebrate their birthday, on the day many will have access to a safari where they can see the big five.
