16 hours, one woman, and a Ford Ranger: A solo road trip to remember

by Zaghrah Anthony

16 Hours, One Woman, and a Ford Ranger: A Solo Road Trip to Remember

There’s something quietly thrilling about taking the wheel of a powerful bakkie and heading solo from Johannesburg to Cape Town. For me, it was 16 hours behind the wheel of a Ford Ranger XLT 2.0L diesel automatic, and I couldn’t have felt prouder.

From Passenger to Driver

I’d driven a Ranger before, but only as my husband’s co-pilot. This time, the wheel was mine. Over-packed luggage and all, the journey felt surprisingly smooth. Compared to my usual compact car, the Ranger felt like a home on wheels — solid, spacious, and supremely comfortable. Cruise control, leather seats, and a commanding driving position made the long stretches on the N1 and N2 highways a pleasure rather than a chore.

The infotainment system, Bluetooth, USB ports, and playlists kept the road alive, while lane-keeping assist, rearview cameras, and multiple airbags gave me confidence through mountain passes and busy highways.

Driving as Empowerment

Stats SA reported in 2020 that only 22% of South African women hold a driver’s license, and even fewer regularly drive larger vehicles like bakkies. Taking the Ranger solo wasn’t just a road trip — it felt like reclaiming confidence. Each kilometre increased my comfort and joy behind the wheel, transforming what could have been daunting into genuinely empowering.

Family, Fun, and Cape Town’s Charm

Cape Town greeted me warmly. The Ranger carried me from the Cape Flats, where I reconnected with childhood friends and family, to Fish Hoek, with its ocean views and breezy holiday vibes. A short detour to Porterville led to a friend’s artsy farmhouse, complete with whimsical touches like Smarties on the bed, making the stay feel personal and heartfelt.

The highlight? A family reunion after five years, with my two brothers — one visiting from the Netherlands — and cousins I hadn’t seen in ages. Laughter, stories, and catching up made the trip unforgettable.

The Drive Home

The return journey was a bit tougher with my son in tow. Fatigue set in faster, but the Ranger handled every curve and stretch with ease. Spacious, stable, and packed with comfort and safety features, it turned what could have been a stressful drive into another enjoyable adventure.

More Than Just a Trip

This wasn’t just a drive from Joburg to the Mother City. It was a personal milestone, facing fears, reconnecting with roots, and creating lifelong memories. The Ford Ranger XLT 2.0L diesel automatic made it possible, proving that the right vehicle can turn an ordinary road trip into a journey of confidence, comfort, and connection.
