On Saturday, the creative talent in the form of actors, directors, producers as well as writers all came together to celebrate their outstanding contributions to the South African film industry at the Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards which was held in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal.

While the evening saw many being awarded for their creativity and storytelling abilities, it was the actress and the first ever black Miss South Africa Cynthia Shange who stole the show after being honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

The former beauty pageant contestant has been praised for her ability to transition from the modelling stage to the world of acting, having made appearances in several well-known productions including Shaka Zulu and Muvhango.

In an interview with Sunday World, she said: “I am thrilled, what else can I say. I am grateful. It feels like a dream, but I am honoured.”

She later added that she feels sad when she thinks about other talented individuals who have started this journey alongside her and will now not get to see her celebrate this occasion.

“Most of them are gone, and I wish they were here with me.”

She later explained that the key to remaining consistent is that she stuck to being true to her authentic self.

“I am just me, what you see is what you get. I don’t change or try and pretend to be somebody else.”

Other big winners included:

  • TV Award – Thembinkosi Mthembu (Best Actor).
  • TV Award – Deli Malinga (Best Actress).
  • Film Award – Masoja Msiza (Best Actor).
  • Film Award – Jo-Anne Reyneke  (Best Actress).

Furthermore, Sibusiso Gumbi, acting CEO of the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism and Film Authority added: “We are immensely proud of all the winners and nominees, who continue to raise the bar and push the boundaries of creativity. Their dedication and passion inspire us all.”
