South African rapper Da Les is still in critical condition following a stroke last week.

The family of the artist stated on social media that the incident happened last Friday at his home and he had been rushed to hospital.

Da Les was supposed to celebrate his birthday that same night at Rosebank nightclub Louis.

Fans and friends wished the record producer, real name Leslie Jonathan Mampe, Jr. a speedy recovery following the shocking incident.

To help his family with mounting medical bills, those closest to the rapper appealed for donations.

The appeal soon made it onto social media and news headlines. Mampe’s family were then forced to clear up any confusion, saying the call for financial help did not come from them.

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela posted an urgent update on X (formerly Twitter) to set the record straight.

“Some clarity on the trending topic of the Mampe family asking for donations to cover the rapper’s medical bills has revealed that; it was Da Les’ friends who started the call as a gesture of support,” he stated.

Mphela further explained that close friends and business associates of the rapper took the initiative to gather donations and reached out to his mom for her banking details.

I am told the call was initially amongst friends, business partners and associates, then it spread broader.

Someone shared the message with the media, distorting the initial intention and catalyst for the donations drive.
