As a rainbow nation country, South Africa is full of cultural history and diversity as it is home to various native tribes and immigrants who have found and made a new home in the country.
Founded by multi-award winner Pilani Bubu the Folklore Festival is one of the many ways that South Africans celebrate the rich diversity that exists within their borders. Furthermore, the core of the festival is built on the importance of storytelling, and how this medium is used to pass down years of heritage and culture.
“At the heart of it is storytelling, intergenerational dialogue and showcasing and sharing our Indigenous Knowledge Systems through music, poetry, literature, art, and dance! This is more than a music festival! It is a gathering for the whole family which aims to reignite our sense of connectedness and community on South African Heritage Month,” the festival’s website explains.
Supported by the Department of Sports, Arts and Culture (DSAC) and SAMPRA, the festival is returning for its third edition, with the aim of building and strengthening the greater community, as well as encouraging and embracing our diversity. This year will also see the launch of their creative programme #WeTheFolk.

Attendees can expect an action-packed event with various activities to simultaneously learn while having fun. The likes of Amanda Black, Maleh and Sho MAdjozi will grace the main stage to showcase the musical talents that the country has to offer, while legends such as Gcina Mhlope and MOAFRIKA WA MOKGATHI will also be in attendance, parting their wisdom onto the younger generations. Attendees will be treated to a wide variety of films, plays, poems, books and music and a celebration of 30 years of democracy and freedom in South Africa.

This then creates the opportunity for niche artists who are not in the mainstream to be discovered and appreciated by new audiences through the Folklore Community.”
