The name Esther Mahlangu resonates deeply with many people in South Africa, mostly for the impactful significance of Dr Esther’s artwork, which highlights the richness and creativity of the Ndebele culture. Expanding her range, the art savant is set to release a book titled ‘To paint is in my heart’.

Esther gained international notoriety in the year 1989 when she attended and formed part of a French exhibition Magiciens de la Terre, which translates to ‘Magicians of the World.’ Since then, Dr Esther has achieved and accomplished every possible milestone including an honourary Doctorate from the University of South Africa (UNISA), as well as establishing and directing a school that has successfully taught young South African girls about art and various artistic techniques.

In her next venture, Dr Esther is set to publish her very first book which is titled ‘To Paint is in my heart’, which is an alluring exploration of the coveted artist’s life and times, shining a light on the Pan-African significance of her work across the continent and the world.

“To Paint is in My Heart celebrates Mahlangu’s remarkable journey as a pioneer of contemporary African art, whose vibrant and distinctive paintings have captured the hearts of many worldwide. Through a series of interviews with Mahlangu conducted by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Azu Nwagbogu, and Thomas Girst, readers will gain insight into her creative process, inspiration, and the cultural significance of her work. With stunning visuals and engaging narratives, this book offers an inspiring experience to the reader,” Esther explains.

Although the novel itself is an exciting feat, the involvement of Thebe Magugu adds an extra layer to the excitement as it is heartwarming to see South Africans who flourish in their own spaces come together to create new and exciting art.

Thebe Magugu is added as a contributor for his essay titled ‘Fashioning Culture’ which he expands on Esther’s “influence in the space of fashion, and how she continues to preserve culture through the power of cloth.”
