South Africa is mourning the loss of veteran actress Nandi Nyembe, who passed away on 23 August 2025 at the age of 75. Known and loved for her roles in shows like Zone 14 and Adulting, Mam’Nandi left an unforgettable mark on stage and screen. As the tributes poured in, one act of generosity captured the nation’s attention: DJ Zinhle’s heartfelt R10 000 donation to the Nyembe family for funeral costs.

A gesture that touched the nation

The donation became public when influencer Mandisi Tshigana, who had been rallying support for the family, shared a screenshot of the transaction on Instagram. Many South Africans were moved by Zinhle’s kindness and flooded the comments with blessings and gratitude. Messages like “Bless you Ma ka Kairo” and “May your pockets never be empty” reflected the admiration for the star’s willingness to step in during a difficult time.

Preserving Mam’Nandi’s values

While the country celebrates Zinhle’s generosity, Nyembe’s family has also spoken out about their own journey through grief. Her grandson, Jabulani Nyembe, shared that Mam’Nandi had been living with a long-term illness before her passing. He described the family’s focus now as twofold: to preserve her legacy and to remain united in carrying forward her values.

“She was more than an actress. She was the glue of our family, and we want to live out her principles of strength and care,” he said.

Tributes from fellow stars

Nandi Nyembe’s passing has drawn an outpouring of emotion from fellow actors. Generations: The Legacy actress Sannah Mchunu, who earlier this year helped Nyembe with groceries, expressed her heartbreak at the loss of a woman she described as “a true mother figure in the industry.”

On social media, fans shared favourite moments of Mam’Nandi’s performances, with many recalling her powerful final scenes in Adulting. For countless viewers, her work remains a touchstone of authenticity and emotion.

A community united in grief

The response to DJ Zinhle’s donation shows how South Africans rally together in moments of loss. For the Nyembe family, the support offers both financial relief and a reminder of how deeply Mam’Nandi was loved. For the wider public, it reinforces the importance of honouring the cultural giants who helped shape the nation’s creative identity.

As funeral preparations continue, South Africans stand hand-in-hand with the Nyembe family, ensuring that Mam’Nandi’s legacy of talent, warmth, and resilience will live on.
