Cwecwe’s case resurfaces after principal’s resignation

by Silindokuhle Booi

The case of seven-year-old Cwecwe, who was allegedly raped at Bergview College in the Eastern Cape, has resurfaced and has gotten tongues wagging once again.

Cwecwe, a primary school learner, reported that she was asked to sweep a classroom after school while waiting for her ride home. It is allegedly during this time that she was violated.
Medical examinations confirmed that she had been sexually assaulted.

The school’s response to the incident has been widely criticised, with allegations that the principal removed Cwecwe from the school via a transfer letter without the family’s input, and was unresponsive during the early stages of the investigation.

Recently, the principal of Bergview College principal, Jaco Piertese, resigned from his position at the school.

He has cited that the misinformation about his alleged involvement in Cwecwe’s sexual assault has made it uncomfortable for him to continue serving as the school’s headmaster.

Jaco is said to be pursuing the legal route, suing politicians who were certain that he was behind the sexual assault, as he was later proven to not be a perpetrator. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) also discontinued the case due to lack of evidence.

These news were misinterpreted, as many on social media assumed that he had been fired from the school for being found guilty.

In another case, Fanie Piertese, who was a caregiver and shares a surname with Jaco, was allegedly reported by Bianca van Wyk to have pleaded guilty for sexual exploitation of a child, as well as sexual grooming.

This has caused a stir on social media platforms, with netizens linking the two together and claiming that perhaps sexual violation is a family thing, even though Jaco has still not been found guilty.

Many social media users have shared posts saying justice has been finally served for Cwecwe, while others continue to question the latest developments.
