Cwecwe’s case creates traffic on socials once again

by Silindokuhle Booi

Yet again, the justice system of South Africa breaks another family’s heart. The case of the seven-year-old girl who was sexually violated was dropped.

The girl was violated at school after she was lured into a classroom by someone. The story broke late last year when the mother of the victim bled on her Facebook timeline, unfortunately, the posts did not get much reaction at the time.

Early this year, the posts resurfaced quickly where a lot of people now saw them and showed support to the family. Cities had National marches movement in the name of the child’s justice.

Whilst the investigation was going, people of authority were involved including the Minister of Police Senzo Mchunu where he gave out a statement confirming three suspects and the school’s principal who had refused with his DNA sample for tests was one of them. This information was later confirmed to be untrue with Senzo denying it.

As someone who has been following the story since its resurface, I have the same questions as the social media users who have been trying to make sense of the case being closed.

The first question of one social media was, “The announcement that the case was dropped had been done late last year where they were saying there was not enough evidence to make an arrest. Why did they not say exactly this when the case started resurfacing?”

Whilst other social media users engaged under Spitch Nzawumbi’s post where he was also talking about how confusing the case is.

Some users shared their thoughts saying that the case had a lot of powerful people who were able to buy their way out. Others questioned the silence of president Ramaphosa who on a normal circumstance would’ve said something about this case. Whilst others emphasised that they still stand with Cwecwe’s mom.
