Criselda Kananda calls for South African men to denounce femicide

Media personality and Olorato Mangale’s aunt, Criselda Kananda has called all South Africans to urge men to fight against femicide.

This comes after her niece, Olorato’s body was found dumped near Lombardy West, north of Joburg, after she went on a date with her alleged killer.

Criselda recently took to her Instagram page to share her plea to South African men.

“As we navigate the heart-wrenching reality of femicide in our country, it is crucial to acknowledge that this crisis affects us all. It is with a heavy heart that I recognise that our own brothers abo —Makhanya, Mthimkhulu, and Ngubane—are implicated in this grievous murder and selling of their own sisters. We cannot turn a blind eye to the fact that men, including those we know and love, are the perpetrators of violence against us,” she penned.

She also urged that this uncomfortable truth should be confronted head on, and she highlighted that femicide is not just a women’s issue but a societal issue that demands the active participation of men.

“As men, you have a responsibility to challenge the toxic norms and behaviours that perpetuate violence and discrimination against women,” she said.

Criselda urged men to speak out, educate themselves and peers, and to foster a culture of respect and equality. She also shared that she believes men should create safe spaces for women and stand in solidarity with them.

“We urge all South African men to join us in this fight. Let us stand together to denounce violence, to support survivors, and to hold each other accountable. We must work collectively to dismantle the patriarchal structures that allow such violence to persist,” said Criselda.
