South African convicted kwaito star Brickz, whose real name is Sipho Ndlovu has graduated with a marketing qualification.
TshisaLIVE revealed that the graduation ceremony took place in prison, in a YouTube video shared by the publication, the kwaito star is seen posing for pictures wearing a cap and gown from the Boston City Campus.
A family member, who asked not to be named, mentioned to the publication that Brickz is embracing the opportunity to study while in prison.
Brickz is currently serving a 15-year jail sentence at Leeuwkop Maximum Facility after being convicted of raping a 17-year-old relative in 2013. Despite serving the sentence the once-loved kwaito star has allegedly moved from the genre to preach the word through gospel music. A friend who visited the musician told ZiMoja that Brickz is looking and feeling positive.
The friend added, “He listens to more gospel music and started making gospel. He also sings in the choir; he has always been a good singer outside of kwaito and rapping. He will always be a kwaito artist, but the gospel has kept him sane and thinking positively. His faith has improved, and he is wise and a spiritual guy. That is the Sipho that we all grew up with before the fame.”
In addition, Brickz performed outside of prison and when TimesLIVE contacted his grandmother about his performance at Grace Point church, Brickz’s grandmother, Adelaide Mabaso, said she was proud to see him stick to the teachings he was raised with.
A close friend of Brickz, who did not want to be named, told TshisaLIVE that the singer is in good spirits and glad to have performed outside the prison for a change. “Anyone in his position would be happy to do what he loves, especially now as he has switched back to gospel. He once said gospel music calms him and reading the Bible gets him by daily.”
