TikTok erupts over Chris Olsen’s close encounter with lions in Kruger National Park

TikTok erupts over Chris Olsen’s close encounter with lions in Kruger National Park

A routine safari in South Africa turned into a heart-pounding adventure for American TikTok creator Chris Olsen, who found himself stranded just metres from two male lions in Kruger National Park. The video, now viral, has captured the awe—and humour—of millions around the world.

Olsen was exploring the iconic park in Ehlanzeni, Mpumalanga, when his safari vehicle suffered a punctured tyre on wet grass, leaving him immobilised as the sun began to dip below the horizon. In a now-famous clip, he pans the camera toward the lions lounging nearby and asks in disbelief, “So you’re telling me our safari truck broke down in front of…?”

A tense but managed situation

Thanks to the quick response of the park guides, another safari vehicle arrived to tow Olsen to safety. Despite the adrenaline-charged situation, he kept his trademark humour, joking in the TikTok caption: “My service also keeps going in & out, so I’ll let you know if I live.”

The video quickly amassed over 1 million views, with viewers reacting in a mix of laughter, advice, and sheer amazement. One user, @ashleydianafoster, playfully suggested, “As a South African, just ‘Pspspsps’ and they will know you come in peace 🥰.” Others joined in the fun, with @captainlonsdale quipping, “They ordered Uber Eats,” while @tessy712 reassured him, “Don’t worry! You’re in good hands with our guides!!”

More wildlife magic

Olsen later confirmed that he was safe and well, and he continued sharing his African wildlife adventures. In a follow-up video, he entertained fans with another close encounter—this time with an elephant during a rain shower, playing Taylor Swift to the animal’s amusement. “Playing Taylor Swift for this elephant because he probably hasn’t heard her yet. He started vibing at the end, I think,” he remarked.

The videos highlight not only the thrill of Kruger National Park but also the unexpected humour and wonder of being in the African bush. Olsen’s lighthearted storytelling, combined with raw wildlife moments, has cemented this encounter as one of TikTok’s most memorable safari clips in recent times.
