The return of Checkers’ Little Shop promotion has once again captured South Africa’s attention, but this time it is not just about collecting. A Johannesburg mother has sparked a viral conversation after turning her minis into something entirely new: Crocs charms.
A Campaign That Always Gets South Africans Talking
On 22 September 2025, Checkers relaunched its much-loved Little Shop. This year’s edition features 46 collectables made from 80% post-consumer recycled materials, adding an eco-friendly touch to the craze. For every R200 spent on participating products with an Xtra Savings card, shoppers receive one mini.
To keep them organised, Checkers is selling a Collector’s Case for R99.99, which also doubles as a board game designed for the minis. There is also a big prize at stake: anyone who buys three qualifying items and swipes their card can enter the draw to win a five-night family holiday to LEGOLAND Dubai worth R224 000.
A Creative Twist in Joburg
While many South Africans are busy filling their cases and swapping duplicates, Johannesburg mother Sakeenah McHenry chose a different path. On 1 October, she posted a TikTok video showing how she slotted the soft, rubbery minis into the holes of her Crocs. With a light-hearted caption, “They don’t fall out,” she showed off a new way of wearing the collectables.
Her playful approach instantly stood out. What was meant to be a board-game piece suddenly became a fashion accessory.
Reactions Split Down the Middle
The video quickly gained traction online and sparked mixed responses. Some viewers praised her for being innovative and said they wanted to try it themselves. Others were less impressed, with comments suggesting the minis belonged in their cases or that the Crocs looked worse with the charms attached. One user bluntly remarked, “I never thought Crocs could get more ugly.”
Despite the criticism, the hack generated fresh energy around the campaign. Instead of just trading and collecting, people were now debating new uses for the minis.

More Than a Toy
McHenry’s idea shows how South Africans often reinvent promotions to fit their own lives. For Checkers, it also means added visibility: the minis are no longer tucked away at home but are now being shown off on shoes and across social media feeds.
Love it or not, the Crocs hack has turned a supermarket giveaway into a broader cultural moment. Once again, the Little Shop minis have proved they are more than toys. They are conversation starters, symbols of creativity and a reminder of how small things can spark big reactions.
