Star-Studded Week in Review: Kanye Lands in Jozi, Royalties Row, and Uncle Waffles Speaks Out

by Zaghrah Anthony

Johannesburg is set to welcome a global superstar this December. Ye, yes, the artist formerly known as Kanye West has South African fans buzzing after sharing a poster confirming his performance at Ellis Park Stadium on December 13.

While excitement is high, not everyone is convinced. Some fans raised questions about the event’s eligibility and ticketing, but organisers, Monyake Group, promised that the night will also highlight the best of local talent, aiming to shine a spotlight on South Africa’s music scene.

Social media reactions have been a mix of awe and skepticism, with many expressing hope that the local music showcase will be as big as the headline act itself.

Mourning a Political and Business Figure: Mandla Mthembu

This week also brought somber news. Businessman and long-time ANC member Mandla Mthembu passed away at 68 in New York after suffering a second stroke. His family shared a heartfelt statement praising his dedication and noting the tireless efforts of medical staff.

Mthembu’s passing has sparked conversations on social media, with many reflecting on his contributions to both business and politics in South Africa.

Lady Du Crowned at Africa Stars Gala 2025

South African music powerhouse Lady Du (Duduzile Ngwenya) added another accolade to her growing resume. She was recognised as the Icon of Female Innovation in Africa at the 2025 Africa Stars Gala.

The singer, celebrated for her creativity, leadership, and entrepreneurial vision, took to Instagram to thank fans for their support. The award underscores her role as a trailblazer for women across the continent.

Uncle Waffles Claps Back at Rumours

Amapiano DJ sensation Uncle Waffles is not here for gossip. Taking to TikTok, she addressed ongoing rumours about her weight and sexuality.

Her message was clear: she lives for herself, not for public approval. On rumours about her sexuality, she added: “Who are you to expect me to explain myself, especially about my anatomy?”

Fans rallied behind her, praising her confidence and refusal to let online chatter dictate her narrative.

“Hamba Juba” Royalties Controversy

Local music has also been making headlines for less glamorous reasons. JL SA, producer of the viral hit Hamba Juba, revealed on social media that he hasn’t received any royalties, despite the track amassing millions of streams.

Singer Lady Amar confirmed she, too, hasn’t been compensated, sparking debate online about fairness and transparency in the South African music industry.

Jimmy Kimmel Returns After Brief Suspension

Over in the U.S., talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel is back on air after ABC temporarily suspended his show following remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death. Disney later announced that thoughtful discussions with Kimmel led to the show’s reinstatement.

Fans of the show have expressed relief and curiosity about how Kimmel will approach sensitive topics moving forward.

Personal Triumphs Amid Rejections

Beáta Bena Green, a model and actress, shared an emotional Instagram post reflecting on her fourth rejection from the Miss SA pageant. Rather than dwell on disappointment, she embraced the experience as growth, saying hard work sometimes delivers what you need, not what you want.

Meanwhile, actress Nomzamo Mbatha is soaking in New York, sharing highlights from her adventures—including a surprise encounter with Mariah Carey.

And in love news, reality star Jojo Robinson celebrated her 11th wedding anniversary with husband Calven ‘Boo-Bear’ and their son in Abu Dhabi, offering fans a glimpse into her family life.

From international icons like Kanye and Jimmy Kimmel to local heroes in music and acting, South Africa’s celebrity landscape continues to weave a complex narrative of triumph, struggle, and resilience. Fans are engaging like never before, proving that even in a globalised celebrity ecosystem, local voices and experiences remain at the heart of the story.
