As of late, it appears that controversy is the order of the day for veteran hip-hop artist Cassper Nyovest, as he has been embroiled in a scandal. Recently, the ‘Kusho Bani’ hit maker took to L-Tido’s popular podcast to reveal who the real hip-hop OG is.

Born Refiloe Phoolo, Cassper Nyovest’s career in hip-hop has been a tale of longevity impact, as he has built a credible legacy as one of South Africa’s most successful rappers, and artist in general. As a testament to this, Cassper has been able to even establish himself as a notable entrepreneur and businessman, and has dabbled in ventures such as his popular ultra-premium liqueur brand, Don Billiato.

Despite dominating and holding Mzansi’s hip-hop industry down over the past decade, his legacy recently came under question, as some of his fans revealed that the trajectory of his latest sound was questionable, as it did not reflect the work of a seasoned veteran like himself. Despite dominating the charts since its release, his latest offering, ‘Kusho Bani’, has been a constant source of controversy as listeners could not come to a consensus regarding its palatability.

Matters escalated when controversial figures Mac G and Sol took to their equally controversial Podcast and Chill platform to make utterances that rubbed Cassper the wrong way, resulting in some scandal and controversy surrounding his name.

Recently, the rapper returned to L-Tido’s podcast to continue on this controversial path and get a few things off his chest. In the episode, Cassper expressed that despite what anyone else believed, he knows that he is the OG of South African hip-hop, citing superstars such as A-Reece coming into the scene sporting Cassper Nyovest hoodies.

Furthermore, the ‘Phuma Kimi’ hit maker continued to take jabs at A-Reece, revealing that although he is a good artist, he is not great, and will never live up to the legacy of Cassper Nyovest. He attributes this to A-Reece intentionally establishing himself as a sort of niche artist, with a niche and loyal fanbase, thus disallowing himself to connect with a greater audience, particularly outside of his hometown, Pretoria.

According to Cassper, whether you compare overall streams, views, endorsements or any other criteria used to separate the good from the great, no local artist is coming close to his impact and legacy.

“I am the OG, I don’t care what anyone says. You all small boys to me, all of you,” Cassper passionately stated.

“Better Streams,views & money”?👀

Bro doesn’t have a competition/rival since the absence of AKA and he’s cool with everyone(Nasty C,K.O,Emtee, etc) but there’s only that one guy,the guy with a crazy fanbase who’d get the rivalry going. pic.twitter.com/L1tyTIjNA9

Taking to his Instagram, Mufasa doubled down on his stance and poked at the situation with his latest post. Some fans believe that the veteran rapper is using controversy to market his upcoming and highly anticipated ‘Fill Up Free State Stadium’ event set to take place this December.
