A shocking attic find

A Western Cape homeowner got the fright of their life after discovering a Cape cobra hiding in the attic. Known as one of the most venomous snakes in South Africa, a cobra in the roof is enough to send anyone into a panic. Snake handler Eduanne Niemand from Boland Snake Removals 24/7 and Pest Controls was called to the scene to deal with the unexpected visitor.

A rescue with a twist

After carefully removing the reptile, Niemand noticed the snake appeared thirsty. In a moment that surprised many, he gently offered the cobra bottled water. The snake accepted, sipping directly from the stream before being given more in a container. It was an unusual sight: one of Africa’s most feared snakes calmly drinking from the hand of a human.

South Africans respond

The video of the rescue quickly circulated online and drew a flood of comments. Some praised the handler’s kindness and calm approach, calling it a touching gesture of empathy. Others admitted they would never set foot in that house again if they had found such a snake in their ceiling. Many were simply stunned at how casually the handler interacted with such a dangerous animal.

Why it struck a chord

In a country where encounters with wildlife often spark fear or even violence, this rescue showed a different side. It reminded people that even the most dangerous creatures need water and care. It also highlighted the skill of professional snake handlers, who often face criticism but play a vital role in keeping both humans and animals safe.

More than just a viral clip

Beyond the shock factor, the rescue raised awareness about why snakes end up in homes in the first place. Heat and drought often drive them closer to human spaces in search of food or water. Instead of panic, this moment offered a lesson: with the right knowledge and respect, humans and wildlife can interact without harm.
