Caiphus Semenya is reportedly demanding royalties from AKA

Multi award winning musician Caiphus Semenya is reportedly suing the late rapper AKA, along with his team for sampling his songs.

According to Sunday World, the Dial Your Number hitmaker is allegedly taking the late musician and his distribution company, Sony Music, to court for not paying him for sampling two of his songs.

The renowned jazz maestro is demanding 50% royalties after AKA sampled his songs. The news publication’s source said Caiphus’s demands came after realising that the late rapper sampled a segment of his old song in his recent track, Diary, without his permission.

Diary is a track from AKA‘s posthumous album Mass Country, which was released on February 24.

While speaking to the publication, Semenya said that he instructed his record company, Gallo, to deal with the infringement of copyright. He also told the publication that he had met AKA before and the Sim Dope hitmaker had apologised for sampling his music and promised to fix it.

“Basically, he was a nice young guy. He told me that he had done something wrong that he was not supposed to do,” he told the publication.

“He apologised and asked how he could fix it. We spoke about it, and he promised to fix things. I told him that the song was nice because music doesn’t have to be in one style,” Caiphus Semenya added.

AKA‘s fans weight in on the matter along with entertainment commentator Phil Mphela and here is what Phile had to say:

Songs with samples without clearance from the other artist should never be released.

Ntate Caiphus has every right to demand his dues from the songs.

It’s not personal or an affront to the late AKA or his legacy.

Stop being disrespectful to Mr Semenya.
