The legendary music group, Boom Shaka, was recently honoured with the Freedom Legacy Award for their contribution to South African music culture.

The group consists of Thembi Seete, Theo Nhlengethwa and Junior Sokhela. The group was formed in 1993. At the time, they were four including their former lead singer, Lebo Mathosa who passed away in 2006 in a car accident.

The group introduced itself to Mzansi with their first single, It’s About Time – and subsequently released their LP titled Kwere Kwere in 1994. Recently, the group attended the 13th edition of Basha Uhuru Festival, known to bring music and fashion lovers together. This year’s theme was ‘Celebrating the Legacy of Creative Expression’, and the line-up was hot with performances from Khuli Chana, Lamiez Holworthy, Pabi Cooper, Admiral, and Jahseed at Constitutional Hill in Johannesburg.

Speaking to The Citizen, Thembi Seete said: “Every time we are honoured or appreciated, I feel surprised. When we started, we never imagined we’d be celebrated like this.”

Taking to her Instagram, the former Gomora actress said: “Last night was unforgettable at the Basha Uhuru Sounds of Freedom Music Festival. We are truly honoured to have received the Freedom Legacy Award. It was a beautiful celebration of music, art, and the spirit of freedom! A big shout-out to our supporters who have been with us since day one. We love and appreciate you all,” she penned.
