Married at First Sight SA’s Bongani Luvalo Opens a New Chapter with Second Novel

by Zaghrah Anthony

Bongani Luvalo, known to many from Married at First Sight South Africa, is inviting readers into a fresh chapter of his life—not on reality TV, but on the page. His second novel, Ntliziyo Ungumkhohlisi – Falling in Love with an It Girl, hits shelves this week, promising a story of love, loss, and self-discovery that resonates deeply with South African readers navigating life in turbulent times.

From Family Roots to the Complexity of Love

Luvalo first captured attention with his debut novel, A Father, A Stranger?, a reflective exploration of family, identity, and reconciliation. The book earned praise for its raw honesty, giving voice to experiences often overlooked in contemporary South African literature.

With Ntliziyo Ungumkhohlisi, loosely translated as The Heart is a Deceiver, Luvalo shifts his lens to romance, tracing the highs and lows of desire and vulnerability. The story follows Mkhuseli, a young professional whose life of achievement suddenly feels hollow when the global pandemic halts the rhythm of normal life. In his search for connection, he encounters an enigmatic “it girl,” a relationship that pulls him into a whirlwind of passion, betrayal, and self-discovery.

Behind the Pages: The Writing Journey

Fans following Luvalo on Instagram have gotten glimpses of the painstaking process behind the novel. “Some people can’t stand listening to their own voices… but do you know the real rollercoaster? Reading and reviewing your own writing while you’re deep in it,” he wrote during the editing phase.

He described the chaos of rewrites, the moments of unexpected genius, and the discipline required to transform a story into a finished book. “And it all comes down to discipline and commitment. They say it’s worth it, and I’m starting to believe them,” he reflected, offering a peek into the mind of a writer balancing creativity with self-critique.

A Star Who Continues to Evolve

Luvalo’s public life expanded with his appearance on season two of Married at First Sight SA, but his literary journey shows a different side: introspective, emotionally candid, and deeply committed to storytelling. Where his debut explored the ties that bind families together, his new work examines the ties that pull people apart—and the courage it takes to navigate the spaces in between.

Fans and followers have taken to social media to celebrate his growth, praising Luvalo not only for his honesty but also for representing modern South African experiences with nuance and depth.

In his own words, Luvalo sums up the journey: “I have walked through many seasons in this journey called life… Yet today feels different. Today I stand in my proudest moment, writing and publishing this book. I have lived up to my own expectations, and with a full heart, I place this body of work in your hands: to hold, to cherish and to journey with, until the very last word carries you apart.”

More Than a Reality TV Star

With Ntliziyo Ungumkhohlisi, Bongani Luvalo proves that he is more than a TV personality, he is a storyteller committed to exploring the messy, beautiful reality of life and love in South Africa. As readers dive into Mkhuseli’s journey, they are invited to reflect on their own hearts, desires, and the lessons that come when the world and love, throws you off balance.
