Black Coffee’s dream of building a music academy gains momentum

by Sergio Miller

Multi-award-winning DJ, Black Coffee, is fully focused on seeing his vision to create the next crop of world-class musicians to come out of Africa materialise.

Following a successful gala evening, which saw the Grammy-award-winning artist raise approximately R3.1 million in Johannesburg, the Drive hitmaker is set to take the initiative overseas.

According to the news and entertainment publication Daily Sun, the second event is set to take place in the beautiful Monte Carlo in Monaco, the same weekend as the F1 Grand Prix.

The DJ, whose real name is Nkosinathi Maphumulo, first started speaking about the possibility of launching the academy in November 2024.

Speaking to TshisaLive at the time, he said: “I am about to do a project that is close to my heart, which is a music college. We have started having meetings about that. We are going to start doing fundraising internationally in the places where I mostly perform. We are going to try to raise funds so that I can build the college.”

Meanwhile, after the first event saw so much success, the CEO of the Black Coffee Foundation Lungie Maphumulo expressed excitement about the dream moving towards reality, highlighting that the success of the first event played a major part in shaping their belief.

“With the Monaco Grand Prix, we are taking our mission to an even greater platform […] This is more than a fundraiser, it’s a movement to shape the future of music,” he said.
