South Africans love a good throwback, especially when it involves one of the country’s biggest global stars. So when a recent video surfaced showing Black Coffee spending time with his former bandmates from the trio Shana, fans were instantly transported back to the early days of his music career.
For many music lovers, it felt like watching history quietly reconnect.
A reunion that stirred up memories
The video shows the internationally celebrated DJ and producer alongside Mnqobi “Shota” Mdabe and Thandukwazi “Demor” Sikhosana. Long before the world knew the name Black Coffee, the three musicians were part of Shana, a trio whose name stood for Simply Hot and Naturally African.
The group formed after the musicians studied music together at what is now the Durban University of Technology. Their shared passion for music quickly turned into a creative partnership, and Shana went on to release music that gained a following in the early 2000s.
Although the trio eventually stepped away from the group format to focus on their individual careers, their musical roots remain deeply connected.
From local trio to global superstar
Today, Black Coffee is recognised as one of Africa’s most influential DJs and producers. The Grammy-winning artist built a global career through his distinctive house music sound, performing at major festivals and venues around the world.
Yet before the international tours and global collaborations, there was Shana.
The trio helped lay the foundation for the creative journey that followed. Their time together introduced audiences to the musical chemistry between the three artists and set the stage for what would later become Black Coffee’s rise in the electronic music world.

Fans react to the nostalgic moment
Unsurprisingly, the reunion sparked excitement across social media. Many fans shared how special it felt to see the artists together again, especially given how far Black Coffee’s career has travelled since those early days.
For some followers, the moment was less about new music and more about celebrating the history behind one of South Africa’s most successful musicians.
Even though the trio no longer actively records together, the connection between the members remains clear.

Are they making music again?
The appearance of the trio together inevitably raised questions about whether a Shana comeback might be on the cards.
However, members of the group have previously explained that the reunion moments are simply friends reconnecting. While they continue to support each other, each musician is currently focused on their own projects.
Still, the possibility of future collaboration has not been ruled out entirely. For now, fans are content with the reminder of where it all began.
And judging by the reaction online, South Africans clearly still hold a soft spot for the trio that helped launch a global icon.
