When an Old Clip Became the Soundtrack to a Divorce Drama

by Chiraag
Black Coffee giving marriage advice to Mnqobi Shoba, resurfaced video amid divorce, South African celebrity therapy conversation, fame and marriage insight, Mnqobi Phumeza Shoba split, Bona Magazine

In the midst of Phumeza and Mnqobi Shoba’s separation headlines, fans were transported back in time to a moment of reflection, not in court, but on screen. An old video began circulating online, showing international DJ Black Coffee offering heartfelt marriage advice to his longtime friend Mnqobi. Suddenly, that clip was no longer just a nostalgic piece of television. It became a mirror for South Africans to think about fame, love, and the lessons we carry from one generation to the next.

A Friend’s Advice Echoes in a Celebrity Breakup

It was social media that gave the clip a second life. On 7 September 2025, a short video of Black Coffee speaking to Mnqobi Shoba during a wedding special was shared widely. The timing could not have been more striking. Mnqobi’s marriage of 11 years was reportedly unravelling, with rumours of infidelity swirling and his wife, Phumeza Shoba, filing for divorce. Against that backdrop, the footage felt almost prophetic, as though advice once shared in celebration had returned in the middle of heartbreak.

Therapy, Faith, and the Education We Never Had

In the video, Black Coffee opened up about why therapy had become part of his own divorce journey. He reflected on the absence of traditional guidance, explaining how fathers often failed to prepare their children for the emotional complexities of adulthood. He encouraged Mnqobi to embrace therapy fully, not only with one counsellor but as a continuous process of self-discovery. He also spoke about faith as an anchor, suggesting that personal growth lies in the balance between spirituality and professional help.

Black Coffee gives his childhood friend Shota this advice about MARRIAGE and fame:

“Your father and my father were NOT men that were equipped with the skills to advise us to be the men we are…” 😭😭😭

The Digital Courtroom: Fans Weigh In

South Africans were quick to respond once the clip resurfaced. Some questioned Black Coffee’s take on older generations and whether it was fair. Others debated the influence of celebrity advice on deeply personal matters like marriage. The reactions ranged from blunt criticism to thoughtful reflection, highlighting how public figures often become lightning rods for wider social debates.

A Lesson for Public Figures and Ordinary People Alike

What lingers beyond the gossip is the reminder that private conversations can suddenly feel public when played back years later. This moment shows that advice on love, therapy, and accountability can resonate far beyond the original setting. For some, it was a cue to reflect on their own relationships. For others, it was a nudge toward considering therapy in a culture where it still carries stigma. In the end, it is less about celebrity scandal and more about the way conversations around healing and growth ripple into everyday life.
