Beyond the music: L’vovo plans to champion mental wellness

by Staff Bona

South African kwaito star L’vovo Derrango is embracing a new purpose beyond music. After surviving a life-changing stroke in 2022, the musician says his focus has shifted towards raising awareness about mental wellness, healing and resilience.

As reported by TimesLive, the artist, whose real name is Thokozani Ndlovu, recently revealed that financial support from fans, amounting to about R200,000, will help fund his ongoing recovery and a new mental wellness initiative that he plans to announce in the near future.

A remarkable recovery

L’vovo suffered a stroke which left him with significant speech and mobility challenges. Through physiotherapy, counselling and determination, he has made substantial progress and has regained his ability to speak, walk and exercise.

While he continues to work on improving movement in one of his arms, the musician says his greatest breakthrough came from changing his mindset. Rather than focusing on his limitations, he chose to believe in his recovery and remain committed to the rehabilitation process.

Why mental wellness matters

L’vovo’s experience has inspired him to encourage conversations around mental wellness, depression and emotional resilience. He hopes his story will remind others that seeking professional support and maintaining hope can play an important role during difficult times.

Although fans can expect new music in the future, L’vovo says his immediate priority is using his platform to inspire others. By sharing his personal journey, he hopes to reduce stigma around mental health and encourage South Africans facing personal challenges to seek help, stay resilient and believe that recovery is possible.
