Bafana legends held at gunpoint at SAFA premises

The South African Football Association (SAFA) is on a quest to tighten up on security at their headquarters, otherwise known as the Technical Centre in Fun Valley Johannesburg.

This after well-known Bafana legends Aaron Mokoena and David Nyathi were both held at gunpoint and robbed in their rooms while on the premises.

The incident occurred on Friday evening, 9 February, when a group of armed men stormed onto the premises and demanded that security escort them to the rooms of the soccer legends.

News and entertainment publication Sunday World reports that both Aaron and David were stripped of several valuables including a laptop, cell phones, watches as well as Aaron’s car.

Following the incident, Gronie Hluyo, who is the chief financial officer at SAFA, was called to the scene.

In conversation with Sunday World, he said that the situation was extremely traumatising but that the legends had been recovering well from the ordeal.

“The guys from Tracker found Mokoena’s car and brought it to the Eldorado Park police station. The plan now is to beef up security at Fun Valley and to have more guards patrolling.

“Security and police need to be visible, especially at night because the place is in an isolated area. This will allay the fears of our team members who camp at the venue.”

The facility is considered to be a one-stop training centre for lodging and training and often hosts junior national teams, coaches as well as administrative staff at the resort.

Meanwhile, in an interview with City Press, a source revealed that it might be an inside job as SAFA’s finance committee scrapped the security company a week earlier.

“Definitely, this has to do with last week’s finance committee resolution which resolved to cancel the new security company’s contract which has been marred with controversy,” a SAFA source told City Press.
