Excitement is in the air in Yorkshire, England as Bafana legend Lucas Radebe has recently made a return to his former club and a place he has called home for nine years – Leeds United.

Following his local career in South Africa, “The Chief”, as he is affectionately known in those parts of the world, played a whopping 250 games for the English side. Not only was he a standout player, but his knowledge about the game and ability to communicate with both staff and players saw him captaining the team on several occasions.

In some posts he can be seen exchanging vital advice with the current group of younger players who all look up to him.

A statement released by the club revealed that the 55-year-old will be the special guest as the team runs out to compete against Sheffield United.

“We are delighted to welcome Lucas back to Elland Road and he will be brought out onto the pitch at half-time in front of the fans, so give him a huge welcome! We all look forward to you coming back, Chief!” read the statement.

Meanwhile, it’s not all fun and games for the former South African international footballer. British news publication BBC reported that while there, Lucas alongside Leeds winger, Largie Ramazani also held a workshop to educate academy players and local children on Black History Month.

Coming from a country who previously fought a difficult fight against the laws of apartheid, Lucas told reporters that it was encouraging to see that young people in England were committed to anti-racism movements in the local communities.

Speaking on his return he added that it was wonderful being back as it reminded him of the great memories with the club.

“It made me who I am and being able to come back and do different programmes like we have been doing today with Black History Month – is very important to us.”
