The annual music festival ‘Back to the City’ is back for its 18th instalment and is set to commemorate its impact and longevity in the hip-hop scene. The festival debuted back in 2007 for the first time and has since contributed immensely to the South African hip-hop culture year in and year out.
As described by the Webtickets website, ‘Back to the City’ festival is a “unique annual youth event that has grown into the largest public display of both commercial and underground Hip Hop in Africa, presenting a day of live music, street art, break-dancing, art installation, skateboarding, film, street fashion, gaming, speakers and panel discussions.”. The event will kick off in the daytime and end late, so it caters to those who prefer to party early, and the night owls.
In partnership with Hennesy, this year’s edition of the festival is set out to be the event of the summer, “presenting a day of live music, street art, break-dancing, art installation, skateboarding, film, street fashion, gaming, speakers and panel discussions. From the daytime events to the nightly performances, this is one time that the inner city comes alive with true freedom of expression providing a destination for hip-hop fans, artists and industry-related individuals to converge and celebrate the experience of hip-hop and youth culture,” says the event website.
Since its inception, ‘Back to the City’ become a hub of the hip-hop culture by providing a platform for young and upcoming artists to showcase themselves. Hip-hop sensation Big Zulu was the first-ever winner of the ‘Back to the City’ competition, which was sponsored by Redbull at the time. Although it’s hip-hop-orientated, this year’s lineup is set to include various artists and cater to a diverse audience.
Founder of the festival, Osmc Menoe took to his Instagram to share his gratitude for the support shown to him, as well as to share details of this year’s edition of the event.
“TITLE IS THANK YOU FOR THE LOVE…Thank you for 18 incredible years of support! Your love and support have been the heart of our journey. Here’s to many more unforgettable moments together!” he captioned the post
